“Your future is created based on what you do today; not tomorrow.”
Robert Kiyosaki

This is an amazing statement by author of “Rich Dad, Poor Dad,” Robert Kiyosaki. If you decide to do something then that action will formulate an outcome/ consequence that will be your future. You can never predict the future because there are so many consequences that are all derived off of your choices today. For example, if you were to become a successful business executive you would begin to learn more about the position therefore you became interested in the career position and let’s say you just currently researched it and did it today not in the future. Our actions today (the present) determine the consequences of our future.

“Never, there is no justification ever for choosing any part of what you know to be evil.”
Ayn Rand

This is an amazing statement by esteemed Russian novelist, philosopher, playwright, and screenwriter Ayn Rand. There is never any justification for committing an improper (Evil) action. We must never attempt to justify an improper action because no matter how much effort is exerted into justifying the action it will never be deemed correct. Society is an important factor in the decision of whether an action is correct or if it is not. Would you expect the justification of an action that caused the deaths of many? No the action will never be justified since it impacted society negatively. Differentiation of right or wrong is different with every person, but the perception of an event that impacted the world will affect many profoundly.

Tip 5: Keep a List of Questions

When you feel confused about something you’re reading, write down any questions you have. Sometimes your questions are answered as you read further. If not, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, teachers create assignments; they’ve read the texts and are familiar with them. When you have specific questions, your teachers can provide answers that will help you better understand the material. Learning is rooted in questions develop and asked by the learner.

Asking questions to yourself, to the teacher, and to others, is a great learning method. When you cease to ask questions, you cease to exist to a great extent. Read actively by silently asking questions as you read. Questioning immerses you into the material you are reading and therefore will expand your mental capacities more than almost anything else.

The philosopher Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” Improving your reading comprehension is the key to gaining important knowledge and making the most of your education. So pick up a book … and a pen.

“When I was teaching basketball, I urged my players to try their hardest to improve on that very day, to make that practice a masterpiece. This rule is even more important in life than basketball. You have to apply yourself each day to become a little better. By applying yourself to the task becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be. It begins by trying to make each day count and knowing you can never make up for a lost day.”
John Wooden

This is an amazing quote by former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. Being a dedicated athlete I also believe that you can never compensate for a lost day of training. If we expect to become better at something then we should continuously indulge ourselves in that activity with the desire to improve. If you apply yourself positive results will soon manifest themselves because of your effort and every day you will improve (even though it may not seem that way.) Dedication is a large contributing factor to improvement and depends on how much is exerted. This marvelous quote explains the importance of dedication and also depicts the countless individuals that have been inspired by Mr. Wooden.

Tip 3: Research

Literary critics have written vast numbers of analytical and critical pieces on countless books. If you’re having trouble understanding a particular text, do some research and see what knowledge sources have to say about it. In addition to increasing your comprehension, you’ll also be demonstrating initiative, something teachers always like to see. Always use legitimate and scholarly sources, not condensed study guides. Going the extra mile in your research elevates your achievement 10-fold.

Tip 4: Use a Dictionary

Make sure you have access to a dictionary when you’re reading. You can often figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word by using context clues, but sometimes it is difficult. Rather than simply skipping over the words you don’t know, take the time to research and find the definition. The results are well worth the effort. Your comprehension will increase greatly, and you’ll build your vocabulary at the same time.

Mario Cuomo

This is an amazing quote by Mario Cuomo the 52nd governor of New York. When you feel as if what you are about or the action that is currently in progress is wrong then the consequences manifested by your choice will affect you in an incorrect manner. When you decide to not participate in an action that you know is incorrect then your consequences will be positive. Incorrect actions also affect you psychological state in where you will feel guilt and know that the action that you committed was incorrect and then therefore will manifest negative consequences that will gravely affect you.

Reading and writing go hand in hand. The better you understand a text, the more likely you are to successfully communicate your thoughts about it in writing. So, it is important to develop strong skills in both areas. With that in mind, here’s how to improve your reading comprehension.

Tips 1-2

Tip 1: Annotate

Be an active reader. Instead of passively reading the text, take notes about important story elements, key factual information, and significant ideas in the text.

Tip 2: Note the Author’s Writing Style

Every author writes with a purpose, using deliberate methods to successfully relate specific information to the audience. When you’re reading look for patterns in the author’s writing. For example, you may notice a repetition of key words, phrases, or symbols – or the use of a distinct type of sentence structure. Authors employ these writing strategies to help readers comprehend a central argument or theme, so be sure to explore how these techniques create meaning.

“The Three Don’ts: Don’t whine, Don’t complain, and Don’t make excuses.”
John Wooden

This is an amazing quote by former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. You can never prosper if you complain about doing things that will benefit you later on. For example, if you are complaining to your Physical Education instructor that you do not want to run, that it’s hard, and so on while you are not aware that by running you will improve your time on the mile test. Those who whine, complain, and formulate excuses for what they cannot do are blinded by doubt which can deferment their ability to prosper. These “Don’ts” express the fundamental attributes that are essential for success.

3. Set Attainable Goals

If you’re having trouble writing a 25-page paper for class because it seems like such a big job, don’t focus on that final number. Break the paper down and consider each section of your paper individually. You can handle any project in small chunks.

4. Find a Social Support Network

Create a group of people around you who want to help you succeed. Mentors can be teachers, family, or friends who can give you guidance and help you develop new skills. Counselors can help you with planning your courses and starting to explore colleges. You can also reach out to friends and peers who can motivate you by listening and sharing ideas.

5. Acknowledge Your Accomplishments

5 Tips for Staying Motivated: Tips 1-2

To succeed in high school and college, you may have to do your best at all times. But sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated, even when you really care about what you’re doing. Here are five ways to stay on the right track.

1.     Focus on High-Impact Activities

The key to success in school is staying focused on your course work. Make a list to get an overall picture of your workload before you start to tackle any of it. Then, make a plan. Although it’s tempting to do the simplest assignments first, those that take more time and effort to accomplish are probably the ones that you’ll learn the most from.

To determine what your priorities are, rank your assignments in the order of their importance. Then rearrange your time and devote more energy toward those that have the greatest impact your course work and grades. For example, even though all your homework assignments are important, studying for a midterm exam takes priority over writing a paragraph for English class. As you complete each task, think of it as another step on your way to college success.

2.     Create New Challenges ‘

Changing your approach can help you stay interested in what you’re doing. If you’ve been given an assignment similar to one you’ve done in the past, think about it in a different way. If you wrote an essay for a creative writing assignment last year, try a poem this time. For book reports, pick a history book instead of another biography.

Courage strongly influences many individual’s lives. Those who do not act upon courage are referred to as cowards. This quote is expressing the reality that even though someone is terrified or unsure about something the thought that ensures courage will always be a possibility in their minds. For example, a kid went to school and has to perform in a play for school and knows that this will significantly raise the grades of him and his classmates. When he arrives he is terrified of performing, but knows that his friends have ensured their grades on his performance and the still terrified kid performs a stunning and amazing show which helps his classmates and him obtain amazing grades and many label him as courageous which he is.

If you commit an action that will lead to the benefit of many and is overall good in nature then you will be rewarded with immense satisfaction because you did what is right. Doing what is right will be progressively simple if you commit the correct actions more often and it will become much more simple that you would not be conflicted by a proper and by an improper choice. If you commit a proper action then you will not feel any guilt or confliction that would be felt if you committed an improper action and therefore you would be rewarded by your conscience with the satisfaction and approval of your decision. Though committing proper actions can be viewed as a responsibility becuase it sometimes is responsibility that is benefiting for you and for those around you and with practice can soon become an idea that you will always strive for.

Take Advantage of Any Free Time

If you have a study period or a long bus ride, use the time to review notes, prepare for an upcoming class or start your homework. Flash cards are a great learning tool. They are easy to make, easy to handle, and are a marvelous tool to help you learn and remember anything. Punch a hole in the upper left corner of each index card and connect the stack of your flash cards with a ring. Then the cards are bound and are not flopping around. Flash cards bound like this act like a small book with pages. You can even have separate ringed stacks for each subject. WHATEVER YOU WANT TO REMEMBER, PUT IT ON A CARD.

Study with a Friend

Get together with friends and classmates to quiz each other, compare notes and predict test questions. Consider joining a study group.

Communicate

If you have concerns about the amount or type of homework you have, you may want to talk to your family, teachers or counselor. They can help you understand how much time you need to allot for homework and how to manage your tasks.

Celebrate Your Achievements

“Be always sure you’re right, then go ahead.”
Davy Crockett

This quote expresses the concept of reassurance of ones decisions. You should always be sure of your decision and be able to justify your motive for any action that you are about to commit. Many have their own definition of a correct action, but should understand if others see it as correct. Many fail to recognize the beneficial and correct aspect of their motive. For example, if a boy hit another boy and is punished and when asked for his motive he tells the teacher/ caretaker that the boy took his pencil will that really justify for his violent action? I believe an action should be correct and not done for the benefit of one sole person, but should be beneficial for many.

Keep things in Perspective

Know how much weight each assignment or test carries, and use your time accordingly. Don’t waste time, but be wise and smart. Doing the most important things first is being wise and smart.

Get More Involved

Keep your mind from wandering by taking notes, underlining sections, and discussing topics with others or relating your homework to something you’re studying in another class. Learn actively and not passively. Be anxiously engaged in your studies and you will have a great experience. Demonstrate a good attitude toward home assignments, and you will begin to love doing it.

“Character is higher than intellect.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is an amazing quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Many people are extremely intelligent and contribute greatly to our society, but some who possess great minds do not possess great character. Character is deemed higher than intellect, but some do not believe such. Character above all is an important trait expressing both your interior and exterior qualities that are used to distinguish you from others. For example, if you have an online linked bank account and leave for work you may not suspect that an extremely intelligent individual who can contribute a great deal to benefit society, but instead is illegally accessing your bank account and transferring all of your hard earned money into his account for his own benefit and is going to use that money for improper things. Where does that place him? As a proper individual or as a malevolent individual? He is indeed malevolent despite his intelligence because character greatly exceeds the importance of intelligence when it comes to how you are distinguished in society.

·        Prepare for your classes.

·        Establish a sense of progress.

Here are some tips to help you deal with homework more efficiently and effectively.

Set the Method

Create a good study area with everything you need (for example, a calculator). If you don’t have a quiet place at home, try your school or local library.

Know Where to Begin

Make a list of everything you need to do, and note all deadlines. Do the more difficult assignments first, so you don’t have to face them at the end.

Study at the Same Time Every Day

Even if you don’t have homework every night, use the time to review notes. If sitting down to work is part of your normal routine, you’ll approach it with less dread. Also, you’ll become a pro at using time productively.

You should never try to avoid the consequences presented with doing what is right because those consequences while beneficial or not are the only ones presented with doing the right thing and it is better to endure then to avoid. However, those who do avoid the correct choice do not prosper feel conflicted because of their choices therefore making the future consequences much more severe instead of diminishing the severity of any kind of punishment.

Once you’ve done all of the above, you’ll find you’ve created your own personalized study. Cover the main section of the page and use the key words and questions in the left margin as a quiz.

Stick to it

Review your notes the day you take them and all your notes once a week. That way, you won’t need to study as much when it’s test time. You’ve been doing the work all along. Try out the Cornell system, but if it doesn’t work out for you, experiment with other methods. Ask your classmates how they take notes or ask your teacher for advice. How many shots can you make now?

Summary

Tony Farmer a top recruited basketball star was sentenced 3 years in prison upon several third and second degree felonies. Tony Farmer collapsed the floor after his sentence and looked distraught. Tony Farmer is accused of the attempted kidnapping of his girlfriend, stealing various items from her, and threatening her. His family was distraught when his sentence was announced.

Reflection

Why would this young man commit such things? I for one am very disappointed ant Tony farmer who could have had a successful future, but chose not to. As said by Brigham Young, “True Independence and Freedom Can Only Exist In Doing What Is Right.” This young man decided to do what is wrong and has “willingly” relinquished his freedom by committing improper and devious actions. I cannot stop thinking on how he could have avoided this disastrous situation.

Note-Taking Strategies: Part 3

After Class

As soon as class ends, review your notes and fill in any blanks. Underline, highlight and use symbols to sort through the information. If you don’t understand something, get help from your teacher from your teacher or classmates.

After you’ve reviewed all your notes from class, in the left-hand area of the page write down key words and questions your teacher might ask on a test.

At the bottom of each page, write a summary of the notes. This helps you digest what you’ve learned. It also improves your memory of the material for the long term and for tests down the road.

When you listen and take notes you are better able to comprehend what you just learned and memorize it for later use. Notes are crafted for the purpose of writing down what you are learning (either in a visual or auditory manner) and there are many aspects that can affect your comprehension such as legibility, abundance of important information, etc. Those who are ultimately good listeners will take the best notes and therefore many are considered diligent which will lead them to obtain and comprehend an endless amount of knowledge.

Start by using the main section of your page to take down your notes during class. Be sure to leave space on the left side of the page and the bottom. Things to keep in mind:

1.     Get the speaker’s main points. Don’t write down every word you hear.

2.     Leave blanks in your note to add explanations later.

3.     Organize as you write. Pay attention to cues such as repetition and emphasis.

4.     Indicate main and supporting points as you go.

5.     Jot down key vocabulary, important facts and formulas.

6.     Ask questions. If you’re confused, it’s better to ask while the material is fresh in your mind.

“When you believe you can---you can.”
Dr. Maxwell Maltz

This is an amazing quote by former cosmetics surgeon Maxwell Maltz, M.D. When you are extremely determined to achieve something chances are that you will most likely achieve it. People derive their success form internal and external stimulus which allows them to complete a task and envision and create the growth required for success. When someone believes that they are adequate enough to complete or do something then they will be motivated to complete the task flawlessly. Suppose that your friend wanted to run the mile in under six minutes and was determined always reminding himself that there are no limits that he could not surpass and trains extensively then later when you run the mile your friend is extremely determined and runs the mile in five-minutes and forty seconds, this achievement was all due to his internal motivation and extensive training (derived from the motivation.)
