Tip 5: Keep a List of Questions

When you feel confused about something you’re reading, write down any questions you have. Sometimes your questions are answered as you read further. If not, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, teachers create assignments; they’ve read the texts and are familiar with them. When you have specific questions, your teachers can provide answers that will help you better understand the material. Learning is rooted in questions develop and asked by the learner.

Asking questions to yourself, to the teacher, and to others, is a great learning method. When you cease to ask questions, you cease to exist to a great extent. Read actively by silently asking questions as you read. Questioning immerses you into the material you are reading and therefore will expand your mental capacities more than almost anything else.

The philosopher Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” Improving your reading comprehension is the key to gaining important knowledge and making the most of your education. So pick up a book … and a pen.

Tip 3: Research

Literary critics have written vast numbers of analytical and critical pieces on countless books. If you’re having trouble understanding a particular text, do some research and see what knowledge sources have to say about it. In addition to increasing your comprehension, you’ll also be demonstrating initiative, something teachers always like to see. Always use legitimate and scholarly sources, not condensed study guides. Going the extra mile in your research elevates your achievement 10-fold.

Tip 4: Use a Dictionary

Make sure you have access to a dictionary when you’re reading. You can often figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word by using context clues, but sometimes it is difficult. Rather than simply skipping over the words you don’t know, take the time to research and find the definition. The results are well worth the effort. Your comprehension will increase greatly, and you’ll build your vocabulary at the same time.

Student Success Statement
“He listens well who takes notes.”
Dante Alighieri

This is an amazing quote by Dante Alighieri. Those who listen well and take notes are the ones that will prosper and efficiently gain knowledge. When you listen and take notes you are better able to comprehend what you just learned and memorize it for later use. Notes are crafted for the purpose of writing down what you are learning (either in a visual or auditory manner) and there are many aspects that can affect your comprehension such as legibility, abundance of important information, etc. Those who are ultimately good listeners will take the best notes and therefore many are considered diligent which will lead them to obtain and comprehend an endless amount of knowledge.

The Power of Study Groups: Part 4

Getting the Most Out of a Session

Here are some tips to help your group get the most out of each study selection:

·        Decide what you’re going to do in advance.

·        Prepare for the session, so you can make the most of your time together.

·        Take turns teaching to reinforce your own knowledge.

·        Stick to the session topic.

By supplementing your individual study with a study group, you can reinforce what you’ve learned, deepen your understanding of complex concepts, and maybe even a few new friends. Remember that a friend is a person who encourages you to do your best and to achieve on a high level, one who pushes you to try a little harder and be a little better. If someone pulls you down the wrong trails of life, then those people are not friends, (they are actually your enemies), and you must avoid them at all costs. Whoever said learning can’t be fun? Learning is enjoyable and exciting when you study with others.
