"It is our duty to conecentrate all our influence to make popular that which is sound and good, and (to make) unpopular that which is unsound (and not good)."
Joseph Smith
What I interpret from Mr. Smith's statement is that our duty is to influence others to believe in what is good as popular and what is bad as unpopular. We are all established freedom by society and by law and it is our duty to obey the law, but many don't because what is so popular now a days is rebel. Our society's foundation is dependent on citizens doing what is right and not doing the opposite. If we influence the public into doing what is right by moral standards of course than many will follow the ideal while very few might not. One example is the growing popularity in academic neglectance, many youths only neglect education because they believe that is it's popular than they should follow that ideal and not apply themselves in their education. Students who apply themselves and persevere are adequate and therefore not influenced by their enviroment and their peers alike.

9.  …don’t cram for exams. Successful students know that divided periods of study are more effective than cram sessions, and they practice it.

If there is one thing that study skills specialists agree on, it is that distributive study is better than massed, late-night, last-ditch efforts known as cramming. You’ll learn more, remember more, and earn a higher grade by studying in four, one hour-a- night sessions for Friday’s exam than studying for four hours straight on Thursday night. Short, concentrated preparatory effects are more efficient and rewarding than wasteful inattentive, last moment marathons. Yet, so many students fail to learn this and end up repeating it over and over again until it becomes a wasteful habit. Not too clever, huh?

When you cram, you are taking the shortcut, and shortcuts never produce any real worthwhile results. Also, when you take shortcuts, you feel rather rotten knowing that you could have done better, but didn’t. Shortcuts cut you short. You can’t plant watermelon seed and harvest fresh watermelons the next day. It takes time. Cramming for a test or project and expecting to make a high score the next day is like planting watermelon seeds and expecting to harvest and eat fresh watermelon the next day. Plus, cramming for a test or project doesn’t help you academically, so why even do it. Plan ahead, prepare ahead. Give yourself plenty of days and weeks to prepare for upcoming accountability opportunities.

"What's right isn't always popular. What's popular isn't always right."
Howard Cossel

Howard Cossel is indeed correct. Things that are popular are not always the best things, they can sometimes be attrocious, but since they are alledgedly popular people go ahead and do them. When you do something you know is the correct thing to do, but others do not find it popular or they believe that it's not the correct thing to do, but in reality it is the correct thing to do then go ahead and do. You should not let peoples desires cloud your judgement because those people might not even know right from wrong and will influence you to do something that you will later regret. Many youths today are influenced easily, most youths today are weak they are consumed by others desire that they are influenced into doing what is wrong such as if someone asked you to change your apparel/style of clothing and you are tempted to, but then you notice that you have an interview for a prestigious program and if you wear baggy pants and clothes with violence associated images then you will be less likely to be accepted.

7.  …understand that actions affect learning. Successful students know their personal behavior affect their feelings and emotions which in turn affect learning.

If you act in a certain way that normally produces particular feelings, you will begin to experience those feelings. Act like you’re bored, and you’ll become bored. Act like you’re disinterested, and you’ll become disinterested. So the next time you have trouble concentrating in the classroom. “act” like an interested person; lean forward, place your feet flat on the floor, maintain eye contact with the professor, nod occasionally, take notes, and ask questions. Not only will you benefit directly from your actions, your classmates and professor may also get more excited and enthusiastic.

8.  …talk about what they’re learning. Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put it into words. Talking about something, with your friends or classmates, is not only good for checking whether or not you know something, it’s a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas into words provides the most direct path for moving knowledge from short-term to long-term memory. You really don’t “know” material until you can put it into words. So, next time you study, don’t do it silently. Talk about notes, problems, readings, etc. with friends, recite to a chair, organize an oral study group, pretend you’re teaching your peers. “Talk-learning” produces a whole host of memory traces that result in more learning.

S.S.S: High School Graduation; Pleasure or Pain

High School Graduation: Pleasure Or Pain?
When you graduate High School you feel an incredible feeling of accomplishment, but if you do not graduate then you will feel emptyness for not graduating. I am a 9th grade student who aspires to graduate High School. When I was in 8th grade I was one of many who graduated, but others did not and they showed no signs of perseverance or any concern for their education and if they continue this path I fear that they will not graduate High School. I really want to graduate High School and i know that one of the requirements is to work hard. Those who graduate will be thouroughly compentsated for their hard work while those who dont will not even be reawrded at all and will likely not be successful in life and possibly live in poverty because of their mistakes and their ignorance. Those who do graduate will be successful only if they apply themselves and try to succeed.

5. Don’t sit in the back of the room. Successful students minimize classroom distractions that interfere with learning.

Students want the best seat available for their entertainment dollars, but willingly seek the worst for their entertainment dollars. Students who sit in the back cannot possibly be their professor’s teammate (see no. 4). Why do they expose themselves to the temptations of inactive classroom experiences and distractions of all the people between them and their instructor? Of course, we know they chose the back of the classroom because they seek invisibility and anonymity; both which are antithetical to efficient and effective learning. If you are trying not to be part of the class, why, then, are you wasting your time? Push your hot buttons, is there something else you should be doing with your time?

6.  …take good notes. Successful students take notes that are understandable and organized, and review them often.

Why put something into your notes you don’t understand? Ask the questions that are necessary to make your notes meaningful at some time later. A short review of your notes while the material is still fresh on your mind helps you to learn more. The more you learn, the less you’ll have to learn later and the less time it will take because you won’t have to include some deciphering time, also. The whole point of taking notes is to use the, and use them often. The more you us them, the more they improve.

"The time is always right to do what is right."
Martin Luther King Jr.
This is an amazing quote with simplicity and an inspiring message. Martin Luther King Jr. has always been a symbol for freedom and equality. Time is a concept, an illusion, our way of understanding sequences and events. When we do something that is morally correct or right it is the right time to make that decision, but when we do something wrong then that was a wrong time to perform that action. Time is our way of understanding sequences and events all through out history, but we can never percieve the future and if we do something right or wrong then that will be the right time or the wrong time to perform the action, "only time will tell."

3  ...ask questions. Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge. In addition to securing knowledge you seek; asking questions has at least two other extremely important benefits. The process helps you pay attention to your professor and helps your professor pay attention to you! Think about it. If you want something, go after it. Get the answer now, or fail a question later. There are no foolish questions, only foolish silence. It’s your choice.

4…learn that a student and a professor make a team. Most instructors want exactly what you want: they would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade.

Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor, they are not the enemy, you share the same interests, the same goals – in short, your teammates. Get to know your professor. You’re the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player!

"I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after."
Ernest Hemingway
This is a magnificent quote. After you have commited a good deed then inevitably you will feel good even if it is only a slight feeling of happiness. After doing something wrong then you will feel distraught and guilt. Moral, What is Moral? Well moral is a sort of sense that humans are acquainted with that basically tells us what is right from wrong, no one is born with a sense of right or wrong, their actions are associated with their influences thus influencing their actions which will be either right or wrong.

Succesful Students: 1-2

Successful Students
1-2

Successful students exhibit a combination of successful attitudes and behaviors as well as intellectual capacity. Successful students…

1. …are responsible and active. Successful students get involved in their studies, accept responsibility for their own education, and are active participants in it! Responsibility means control. It’s the difference leading and being led. Your own efforts control your grade, you earn the glory or deserve the blame, you make the choice. Active classroom participation improves grades without increasing study time. You can sit there, act bored, daydream, or sleep. Or, you can actively listen, think, question, and take notes like someone in charge of their learning experience. Either option costs one class period. However, the former method will require a large degree of additional work outside of class to achieve the same degree of learning the latter provides at one sitting. The choice is yours.

 2. …have educational goals. Successful students have legitimate goals and are motivated by what they represent in terms of career aspirations and life’s deserves.

Ask yourself these questions: What am I doing here? Why have I chosen to be sitting here now? Is there some better place I could be? What does my presence here mean to me? Answer to these questions represents your “Hot Buttons” and are, without a doubt, the most important factors in your success as a college student. If your educational goals are truly yours, not someone else’s, they will motivate a vital and positive academic attitude. If you are familiar with what these hot buttons represent and refer to them often, especially when you tire of being a good student, nothing can stop you; if you aren’t then don’t, everything can and will!

"My strength is as the strength of ten because my heart is pure"
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
This a very exquisite quote. I comprehend that Alfred gave us insight into his doing of good and his purity that was not tarnished because of any malovelant actions. Someone is strong when they do good, when they do wrong they exploit weakness thus making him/her a coward. Those who always do good and do the right thing are ones with pure hearts, they cannot be corrupted, but those who do wrong are not and are easily corruptable. Some may ask why someone commits wrong or evil actions?, but what they should be asking is why are they weak and consumed by a "desire" to do wrong which makes them impure unlike those who do good. I awcknowledge this quote, but the cerbral area is what controls our emotions and our way of thinking.

Jackie along with countless of horse trainers are abusing of the horses. A random check of a recent horse shows that 52 horses were found to have come in contact with foreign substances on their legs.
Reflection
Jackie McConell along with many trainers have been abusing of their horses. Jackie McConell should be ashamed of himself  he abused these beautiful creatures to "train" them into walking in an unatural manner which is used for entertainment. Jackie McConell is going to make an appearance in court and will be faced with several charges against him and that is what he deserves along with all the others who have abused and tortured their horses in such a malevolent manner.

My strategies for written assignments: Everyone has their own writing styles. I general come up with an idea and do massive amounts of research before I ever think about writing. I then organize my research then sometimes prepare an outline before actually writing. I always print out the paper and come back to it the next day and reread it. That is the easiest way for me to catch any mistakes. I have to give my eyes a break from it, and if I just wrote it I think it looks perfect. But if I look at it a day later I always find grammatical errors or phrases and sentences I just want to rewrite.

How I succeed in team projects: Never assume someone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. Have regular meetings and have each member show their work, not just give you or the group their word for it.

Study for Multiple Exams
Part 1

How I study for multiple exams, deal with multiple projects: Really it is my time management that I explained above. If I see I have multiple things due or study for all at the same time I spread out my time beforehand. For example, if I have a test for Monday, and 2 tests for Tuesday then I will study for my Monday test Thursday and part of Friday. Start Studying for my next test on the second half of Friday and part of Saturday, then my second Tuesday test on Saturday as well as part of Sunday. Then Sunday night I can review for my Monday test because I already studied for it. When the test is over I can begin reviewing for the other tests. My overall study method: I try to break it up over several days or at least two. I get bogged down if I try to pull an all-nighter. How I’ve overcome an initial bad grade: If I receive a low grade I probably knew it was coming because I didn’t prepare properly or I didn’t use the right study habit for the class. I usually try to go over what I did wrong and sometimes discuss with the teacher what I can do differently on the next exam or what they suggest I do for studying for the next exam.

"Seek to do good and you will find that happiness will run after you."
James Freeman Clarke
This is a very fundemental quote by James Freeman Clarke. If you do good then generally you feel as if you have been rewarded. For example if you assist an elederly woman find a product at the grocery store and after you have helped her you will feel good, happy, and rewarded for helping someone. People are not born to with the ability to commit bad actions they are molded or influinced to do so. If you commit good actions then inevidably you will not feel sorrow or guilt if you did otherwise and did something that was devious. For example, if you help someone homeless by buying them some food then you will feel good, but if you do not or if you beat or if you insult the person then you will feel guilt which is inevidable. If you do good then happiness will always follow.

My test study method: I have different strategies for different types of test and subjects. For me, any type of math exceptionally difficult so I had to spend extra time on that. I would go back through the homework problems focusing on the problems that I had extra difficulty on. Many times I would ask the teacher for any additional study materials they could provide. If it was a class that required memorization or applying concepts I would create a sort of study guide for myself many times focusing on what were key focal points in the class. If I knew they were going to be essays I would try to take the terms and apply them to an example or create different questions on the concepts focused on throughout the semester.

My time management secret: I always, always, always carry a planner with me. I even use different color highlighters to show what each event on my calendar is for. For example, pink is personal, yellow is school, orange is work, blue is for appointments, and green is for my sorority. Although I use white-out frequently, I can see in bright yellow that if I have that project finance due Tuesday, I need to start working on it on [the previous] Wednesday so I can get things done. My friends have always been amazed at how early I get things accomplished but that is really all I do.

Sarah’s Academic Success Story

Time management became a key factor in my study skills for college. In high school, these were times I was able to study for an hour or two the night before a test and get away with it. This was not the case in college. I made sure in college I was prepared for each class. Sometimes I was prepared for each class. Sometimes that meant writing out the terms for the chapter we read (even if it isn’t required) to better understand them. That way when the midterm or test comes around I was able to understand what I was studying. I started taking excellent notes in class in college. I may not have done this in high school, but in college I started typing notes after class. This helped me remember what I just went over in class then when I had a test one week later I was more likely to remember them as well.

My overall study method: Structured. One thing I learned was I had to adapt or change my study method according to the class. I couldn’t study for a religion class the same way I studied for a Finance class. But making sure I had enough time to study for each class-even if it meant carrying a planner with me at all times was a big part of my success.

It’s not a bad thing to not understand, it’s a bad thing if you don’t do something about it. Plan your time out so you are completing everything that needs to get done and leave time to double check. Write things down and have good time management skills. Asking for help is probably the biggest thing I can say though. If you don’t understand, go to the office and check the hours or find a classmate that does understand and is willing to help you. If you try hard, it will come to you. I find myself thinking that I would have to try harder to fail than I try to succeed. It is something that is within me to succeed. If that is not who you are, then hopefully the things that I have done can show you that success is something that is amazing to find! Good luck!

It’s the same for chemistry; if you do the practice problems you will understand the material so much better because these subjects are not just memorization like history, you need to be able to apply what you have learned in practical situations. Also, it was the first paper where they were like, here you go, just write about something, but, it could be anything from the sky is blue to hypnotism. I wrote mine on hypnotism. I worked on the paper for weeks and weeks. Every night I would be doing research and writing. I put so much effort into this paper. It ended up being just under 12 pages, but it was full on information. I turned it in and when I got it back a week or so later, I had received the first A+ of my college career. Part 2

My strategies for written assignments: I try to outline before I write because otherwise I forget what I am supposed to be talking about. I try not to leave them until the last minute because then I will just goof up the work. A lot of times I just write what I feel. Teachers like your opinion and if you can find something from the reading or research relates specially to your life, they like it even more because it allows you to take ownership of your work. I write things that I want others to read: not things that I have to write because the teacher said so.

How I succeed in team projects: Personally; I don’t like working on group projects, especially ones that I have worked on in high school. However, when it is required to work in a group, I usually try to lead. I like to lead because then I know that my grade will be a good one. I do well in school, I always have and I don’t plan on changing that anytime soon, so when I need to work with people who maybe don’t care as much as do, or they have more time to waste on things other than the project, I try to be in charge. That way I know that things are going to get done on time and that I am going to get a good grade. If I am working in a group of people who all want to work; then that is a different story.

My overall study method: I break up studying over several days and over the course of the evening and the day. Cramming never works for me so I try not to do it. I will have longer sessions on nights before big tests, but I never stay up much later than normal before tests. I know that if I take the test tired the next day I will not do as well as if I was rested.

How I’ve overcome an initial bad grade: I usually look over the test on paper to see what I did that the teacher did not want. Basically, I do not stress out about grades that much because for me they are not worth getting really upset about. I do well because I know that material. How I deal with multiple projects tests: When I have more than one test or project, I break up my studying. I will study for one test for 30 minutes or so and then switch to the other one. If there is some part of a project that I know will not take me very long, I will do it when I don’t have much time. If I am really in a crunch for time on a specific day, I will study for one test in the morning and the other in the afternoon or night. By breaking up the studying into different sections, I feel like I get much more done. Cram sessions do not work for me. I need to study something for a shorter period of time more often for it to sink in.

My time management secret: My secret is to use time wisely. I know that on certain days I do not have time to run errands or hang out with friends even. Each minute of the day is used for something. One thing that works really well for me is to write something down. I mean everything. I write down if I am going to email people, write letters, or study. It works for me to have a planner that goes by the day and shows me what I am going to do every day. Knowing what I have to do every day help me plan out my week and my days. If I know that I don’t have time on Tuesday, I will try to get more things done on Monday or Sunday; I plan ahead, especially if I am going to be on the road for volleyball. When I am on the road, I bring my books on the bus/plane/hotel room.
