Student Success Statement
“Everyone is the architect of their own learning.”
Claudius

This is an amazing statement by Claudius. Like our future our education can be manipulated by us and molded to our standards, but like future consequences we must be held accountable for our decisions. The statement above utilizes a superb figurative example conveying the student as the architect and their education as their building. For example, say a student attends all of his classes and completes all of his work while another student does not complete his work and when transported to school does not actually enter the premises. Which of these students will likely have a more promising future? Well it is obviously the one who is setting up an adequate foundation for himself within his education. Let us compare these two students to two managers; the adequate student always instructs his employees on the proper procedures if a fire ever occurs inside of the building while the inadequate student vaguely explains the procedure to his employees. If there was ever a fire then the adequate student’s employees will most likely exit the building without sustaining any mortal injuries. As said before the consequences derived from our decisions will impact many as well as yourself.

Student Success Statement
“Education is a marathon—not a sprint.”
Anonymous

Your education is a long, but worthy figurative marathon because you need to maintain a consistent pace whereas in a sprint you do not because you have used up all of your energy sprinting at your top speed. For example, say a student has been receiving inadequate grades all year and now to raise his grades has to do a lot of extra credit assignments which will tire him therefore leading him to slow down again and not exert the amount of effort he should. If someone maintains the consistent pace then they will be able to succeed in their education because they will sustain enough energy to traverse through their objectives. I myself am a cross country runner and keeping a consistent pace allows me to sustain enough energy to traverse through my objectives while still sustaining enough to sprint when I can, but many sprint form the beginning then slow down then vigorously speed up then drastically decline in speed not exerting the require amount of effort.

Speaking Skills: 2 of 10

Speaking Skills
2 of 10

When you’re assigned a class presentation, think twice before dismissing it as an unimportant aspect of your education. Employers observe job applicants and attempt to evaluate if they express adequate vocal/ communication skills. You may have to present a presentation of some sort to clients or represent your organization in the field. It’s never too soon to practice adequate eye contact and other public speaking techniques.

According to The Book of Lists, the fear of public presentations/ speaking ranks as number one in the minds of the majority of individuals. Far above the fear of death and disease, emanates the fear of standing in front of a crowd. Joel Wiener noted author and public orator desires to help individuals overcome that fear.

“The biggest fear is public speaking, with 15 percent of Americans experiencing a dramatic fear of it,” said Dr. Michael Telch of the Laboratory for the Study of Anxiety Disorders (LSAD) in the Department of Psychology at The University of Texas in Austin. “People have had to turn down jobs, and certainly students have dropped out of class because of it.”

Regardless of your occupation, your success depends a great deal upon your ability to communicate effectively! Whether you’re managing a meeting, marketing a product, creating a presentation, motivating co-workers or just communicating effectively with one person or others, you’ll achieve far better results if you can communicate persuasively, smoothly, and intelligently.

Distance Education: Is a Virtual Education Classroom for You: Part 4 of 4

Distance Education: Is a Virtual
Classroom for You?
Part 4 of 4

Emphasis on the Written Word

Most of the communication as well as the course work, in distance-learning classes are written. That’s a plus, because the focus on the written word gives you the opportunity to develop as a writer --- and strong writing skills are essential for academic success. However, if writing is a serious weakness for you, virtual learning may not be the best educational option until you improve your skills. Yes, most of distance education is the written word; therefore, you need to be a good reader, love to read, and also love writing. Most of your assignments will be written and submitted to the instructor in written format. Your penmanship needs to be excellent, spelling great, sentence structure above average, and vocabulary extraordinary. You need to have online access with reliable equipment. If your Internet communications at home isn’t working, you can’t indulge in online education from home and will need to go someplace else where there is Internet access.

Decide Whether It’s Right for You

Distance education isn’t for everyone, but it just might be for you. You really should seek it out and give it a try. You never know until you try. You might even fall in love with distance education. While distance education may be perfect alternative for some students, it’s not the right choice for everyone. So carefully consider your unique needs and interests and give distance education a try; then, decide if it is the right choice for you.

Distance Education: Is a Virtual Classroom for You?

Distance Education: Is a Virtual
Classroom for You?

Part 3

Challenging Aspects of Distance Education

·        Lack of in-person interaction: Some educators argue that both teacher-student and student-student contact are essential for learning. In a distance-learning classroom, you may be able to participate in class discussions online in chat rooms, message boards or Web conferences --- bit it’s not the same as being with other students in a classroom.

·        Different levels of quality: many distance-education programs supply an excellent learning experience, but others may not. Research any program before signing on to make sure it’s rigorous enough. If you are choosing your own program, look into its accreditation before enrolling.

·        The need to self-start: distance education allows you to make your own schedules. If you have hard time getting motivated, this might not be the ideal educational setting for you.

Positive Aspects of Distance Education

·        Independence and time management: Taking courses online lets you hone your ability to work on your own. You also gain experience in managing time efficiently.

·        A flexible schedule: Schools can only provide a certain number of class periods in a single school day, and there may not be enough time for you to take everything you want. Because distance education lets you take classes outside regular school hours, it gives you the flexibility to explore all your areas of interest.

·        Advanced and specialized classes: Some schools can’t provide advanced or specialized classes. Distance education gives you the chance to gain experience in areas that would otherwise remain out of reach.

Distance Education: Is a Virtual Classroom for You?: Part 1

Distance Education: Is a Virtual
Classroom for You?
Part 1
http://www.collegeboard.com/student/plan/high-school/47337.html

You may want to take a class that your high school doesn’t offer. Under some circumstances, you can still enroll in the class --- through distance learning.

Distance education means taking a class without being physically present where it is being taught. Internet-based technology lets students participate in lectures and class sessions online from almost anywhere.

Some high schools agree to recognize distance-learning credits when they don’t have the resources to offer a course themselves. Distance education is often used to increase options in rural areas and AP® courses.

For you, it might mean doing self-tutorial at home in the evening, or participating in a class that is 1,000 miles away, along with other high schools students. Check with your school counselor to see what’s available.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work: Part 1

Balancing High School and
Part-Time Work

Part 1

Like many high school students, you may want --- or need --- to work part time. Working takes a lot of time and energy, though, so before obtaining a job, make sure that you think about your ability to handle both work and your education.

Important Considerations

You have to weigh a number of factors when deciding whether to take on a part-time job. It’s important to get as much information as possible, so you figure out what choice makes the most sense for you.

Schedule a meeting with your school counselor and discuss the idea of working. Talk to your counselor about why you want to work and what type of position you’re seeking.

Selecting Your Courses: Part 1

Selecting Your Courses
Recommended Classes for College Success
Part 1

http://www.collegeboard.com/student/plan/high-school/33.html

The academic rigor of your high school courses is an important factor in the college admission process. College admissions officers see your high school course schedule as a blueprint of your education. They’re looking for a solid foundation of learning that you can build on in college.

To create that foundation, take at least solid academic classes every semester. Start with the basics and then move on to advanced courses. Challenging yourself is a part of what makes school fun; but you need a firm grasp of the fundamentals before going on to more advanced work.

Profile of a Successful Student: Part 2

Profile of a Successful Student
Part 2

Work Together. There are a number of ways that you can ensure you get the most out of your education experience. First, participate fully. Engage regularly in the discussions and be willing to share your personal, professional, and educational experiences. You can get to know your classmates through the dialogue that is created in a course environment---sometimes even better than in a face—to—face class. And the same goes for your instructor. Be sure to contact your professor---especially if you are having problems. He/she is still your instructor and will be there to guide and assist you as needed.

Profile of a Successful Student: Part 1

Profile of a Successful Student
Part 1

A successful student…

… Takes responsibility for his/her learning

Online learning can be a powerful, stimulating, engaging experience for the student who work and think independently. However, since most---if not all---of the learning takes place on your own time, you will not have the kind of direct supervision you would in a classroom. Online learning therefore requires a significant commitment from you. All education comes down to what you’re willing to invest in the experience---this is particularly true in the online environment. Commitment, self-discipline and self-motivation are all key qualities to ensuring success in an online course!

… is comfortable and confident with written communication

Reading and writing are the basis of most online courses, so it’s critical that you feel comfortable with this form of communication. While some courses contain modules that include videos or other activities, all of them require significant amounts of reading. And nearly all of your communication with your classmates and your instructors will be in writing. If these weak areas are for you, you will want to address those issues prior to enrolling or while enrolled in an online course. The PSU Writing Center is available to assist you.

… is willing to be a member of a learning community

S.S.S: High School Graduation; Pleasure or Pain

High School Graduation: Pleasure Or Pain?
When you graduate High School you feel an incredible feeling of accomplishment, but if you do not graduate then you will feel emptyness for not graduating. I am a 9th grade student who aspires to graduate High School. When I was in 8th grade I was one of many who graduated, but others did not and they showed no signs of perseverance or any concern for their education and if they continue this path I fear that they will not graduate High School. I really want to graduate High School and i know that one of the requirements is to work hard. Those who graduate will be thouroughly compentsated for their hard work while those who dont will not even be reawrded at all and will likely not be successful in life and possibly live in poverty because of their mistakes and their ignorance. Those who do graduate will be successful only if they apply themselves and try to succeed.

Succesful Students: 1-2

Successful Students
1-2

Successful students exhibit a combination of successful attitudes and behaviors as well as intellectual capacity. Successful students…

1. …are responsible and active. Successful students get involved in their studies, accept responsibility for their own education, and are active participants in it! Responsibility means control. It’s the difference leading and being led. Your own efforts control your grade, you earn the glory or deserve the blame, you make the choice. Active classroom participation improves grades without increasing study time. You can sit there, act bored, daydream, or sleep. Or, you can actively listen, think, question, and take notes like someone in charge of their learning experience. Either option costs one class period. However, the former method will require a large degree of additional work outside of class to achieve the same degree of learning the latter provides at one sitting. The choice is yours.

 2. …have educational goals. Successful students have legitimate goals and are motivated by what they represent in terms of career aspirations and life’s deserves.

Ask yourself these questions: What am I doing here? Why have I chosen to be sitting here now? Is there some better place I could be? What does my presence here mean to me? Answer to these questions represents your “Hot Buttons” and are, without a doubt, the most important factors in your success as a college student. If your educational goals are truly yours, not someone else’s, they will motivate a vital and positive academic attitude. If you are familiar with what these hot buttons represent and refer to them often, especially when you tire of being a good student, nothing can stop you; if you aren’t then don’t, everything can and will!
